KL Status Maker FAQ
Everything people ask about the app, in one place.
About the app
Where do I start?
The home screen opens on six named outcomes — a birthday message, a photo dump, a before-and-after, one photo with big words, split a video, or a song with words. Tap one and the app is set up before you pick your photos. The three plain ways in are on the same screen under Start from scratch, and Edit and post below them opens the video or photo editor directly. See Start from an idea.
Is KL Status Maker free?
Yes, and there are no ads. There is an optional subscription that removes the branded ending on videos and the watermark on photos, and optional one-off AI credit packs if you want to use the AI tools.
Is KL Status Maker an alternative to CapCut, InShot, VN, KineMaster, Canva or Picsart?
Yes, for making statuses. It splits a long video into Status-length clips in one export, crops to 9:16, and makes slideshows, collages, text and audio statuses, with no ads.
Do I need an account?
Not for editing. Splitting, cropping, trimming, audio changes, the video editor, the photo editor’s own tools, slideshows, collages and text statuses all work with no account at all. A Google sign-in is only needed for the optional AI tools.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Every export, and every edit but the photo editor’s Restyle tab, runs on your phone. Only the optional AI tools need a connection — everything else, down to the photographs behind the home screen buttons, is already inside the app.
What does the app download on its own?
Nothing. It makes no request of its own at all: the only time it reaches a server is when you use one of the optional AI tools, and that is something you start. Even the photographs behind the home screen buttons ship inside the app rather than being fetched.
Are my videos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your videos and audio files never leave your device, and neither do your photos unless you hand one to an AI tool yourself. Anything else that goes to a server is text, and only if you use the AI tools: what you type into an AI chat, plus the names and keywords of the things the AI tools have already made for you, so one of those can be offered back instead of making another. Two places send a picture of yours and both are ones you choose: Restyle in the photo editor sends the photo you have open so the model has something to repaint, and the AI picture chat sends a photo you attach to it so it can answer questions about it. Both cost credits and both say so before you tap.
Is it only for WhatsApp Status?
No. It is built around the shape of a status post, but every flow ends at the Android share sheet, so the result goes to Instagram Reels and Stories, YouTube Shorts, Telegram, Facebook or anywhere else you have installed.
What Android version do I need?
Android 7.0 or later.
What languages does it support?
English, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Portuguese (Brazil), French, German, Hindi and Indonesian. AI captions answer in your phone's own language.
Does splitting a video reduce its quality?
The first clip is not re-encoded at all - it starts at the very beginning of your video, so the app copies those bytes straight through. Clips after it start part-way in, where cut points rarely land on a keyframe, so those are re-encoded, at the source's own bitrate and its own resolution, so the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Very large videos are scaled to 1080p when a clip is re-encoded anyway, which you can turn off in Settings.
How to make a WhatsApp status on Android
Is it only for WhatsApp?
No. Everything comes out as an ordinary video or photo in the 9:16 frame, so the same share sheet sends it to Instagram Stories and Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Facebook or any other app on your phone.
Is the status maker free?
Yes, and there are no ads. Free exports carry a short branded ending on videos and a small watermark on photos; an optional subscription removes them. The AI tools are optional and paid for with AI credits.
Can the app write my status for me?
Yes, optionally. AI captions writes the words, AI music makes a track, and AI photos makes a picture. They need a Google sign-in and AI credits; everything else in the app needs neither.
How to split a video for WhatsApp Status
How many clips will I get?
The clip count badge on the preview tells you before you export. It is the video's length divided by your chosen clip length, rounded up — so a 45-second video at 30s per clip gives you two clips, the second one 15 seconds long.
Does splitting reduce the video quality?
The first clip is not re-encoded at all. It starts at the very beginning of your video, so the app copies those bytes straight through and clip one is byte-for-byte your original. Every clip after it starts part-way in, where the cut point almost never lands exactly on a keyframe, so those are re-encoded. Those clips keep the source video's own resolution and are encoded at the source's own bitrate, so the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Very large videos - above 1080p on the short side - are scaled down to 1080p when a clip is being re-encoded anyway; you can turn that off in Settings under Editing defaults.
Is there a limit on how long the source video can be?
No. The app works on whatever is on your device. Longer videos simply take longer to export, and the export runs in the background with a progress notification so you are not stuck staring at it.
How long can a WhatsApp Status video be?
WhatsApp keeps the first 90 seconds of a status video and trims the rest away without telling you, so a longer clip does post — it just arrives shortened. That is why splitting is worth doing even though nothing is rejected: each part posts whole, in order. If you tell the app where you are posting — Settings → Editing defaults → Where your status is going — the line above Create warns you when a part is longer than that, before you export it. Nothing is blocked either way, and no clip length is taken away.
Can I split a video without cropping it?
Yes. Cropping lives on its own Aspect tab and is set to Original until you change it. Splitting and cropping are independent.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Splitting, cropping, trimming, audio changes and every other edit happen entirely on your phone. Only the optional AI tools need a connection, and they are kept clearly separate from the rest — including Restyle, the one tool in the photo editor that does.
How to crop a video to 9:16
Will cropping add black bars?
No. It crops rather than pads, so the result fills a vertical screen completely. Black bars are what you get from the opposite approach, and this app does not do that. If you want the whole frame kept and a full vertical screen, that is what Blur fill is for.
What is the difference between Crop to 9:16 and Blur fill?
Both give you a vertical 9:16 file. Crop to 9:16 gets there by removing the sides, so the picture fills the screen at full size but part of the shot is gone. Blur fill gets there by keeping the whole shot at its own size and filling the space around it with a blurred copy of the same frame, so nothing is lost but the picture itself is smaller on screen. Crop when the subject is centred; blur fill when the shot needs all of its width.
Can I choose which part of the frame is kept?
The video crop is centred and not adjustable. If your subject sits off to one side, the photo editor's crop tool does let you position the crop by hand — that applies to photos rather than video.
Does 9:16 work for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts too?
Yes. 9:16 is the same vertical frame WhatsApp Status, Instagram Reels, Instagram Stories, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Facebook Stories all use. One crop covers all of them.
How to trim a video
Does trimming re-encode the video?
Usually, but not always. If you only move the end handle, the trim still starts at the beginning of the video and the app copies it through without re-encoding. Once the start handle moves, the new start point rarely falls on a keyframe, so a clean cut needs a re-encode. That re-encode keeps the source's resolution and uses the source's own bitrate, so the difference stays invisible.
Can I trim and crop at the same time?
Yes. Trim on the Split tab, set Crop to 9:16 on the Aspect tab, and both are applied in the same export.
What if I want two separate sections of the same video?
Use Manual split mode instead, drop a split point on each side of the parts you want, and delete the clips you do not need from the results screen.
How to replace the audio in a video
What if the song is shorter than the video?
The app says so on screen before you export. What happens after the song ends is set by Audio/video length mismatch in Settings → Editing defaults: Mute (the default) leaves the rest silent, Loop restarts the track, Trim ends the output when the track does.
Can I keep the original audio and just add music on top?
Not with this tool — Replace is deliberately a replacement. Use the video editor's Music tab instead, which layers a background track under the original audio with a separate volume slider for each, a fade in and out, and an Auto duck switch that drops the music under speech and brings it back in the gaps.
Why was my video file rejected as an audio source?
Because it has no audio track at all — a muted export, for instance. The app checks up front rather than letting the export fail later with an unhelpful error.
Can I replace the audio for only part of the video?
Yes. Drag either handle on the range slider. Outside the replaced range you choose whether the original audio keeps playing or the video goes silent.
How to edit a video before you post it
Can I use more than one tool at once?
Yes, all seven combine in a single export. Trim, then filter, then speed up, then add music and a sticker — it is one render, not seven.
Does speeding up the video make the audio sound wrong?
No. Speed changes preserve pitch, so a 2x clip still sounds like the same person talking faster rather than a cartoon.
Is the noise reduction an AI denoiser?
No, and the app does not claim it is. It is a high-pass filter plus a noise gate — effective on steady background hum, not a machine-learning model.
What happens if I leave the screen while it is exporting?
The export keeps running and the result is delivered back to whichever flow you started from. It survives the app being closed or the screen being rotated.
How to add background music to a video
What if the song is shorter than the video?
The background track loops to cover the video.
Can I add music to a photo slideshow instead?
Yes, and it is a different control: the photo flow has its own Audio tab for attaching a background track to the whole slideshow.
Does the app supply the music?
Both are possible. It can use any audio file already on your device — check that you have the right to use a track before posting it publicly — or it can generate a track for you with AI, which is written for you rather than taken from a library.
How to turn photos into a slideshow video
How many photos can I use?
Up to 30 per selection, and you can add more afterwards with Add photos, which offers your own gallery or a picture made with AI.
Can I reorder the photos?
Yes — press and hold a thumbnail and drag it where you want it. The numbered badge on each thumbnail shows the current order, and it renumbers as you drag. Order decides the sequence in a slideshow and which cell each photo lands in inside a collage — in the Spotlight layout the first photo is the large one.
Can I put a caption across the whole slideshow?
Yes — the Caption tab burns one styled caption onto the output. See the captions guide.
What if my photos are different shapes?
They are fitted into the same vertical frame. If a particular photo needs different framing, tap its thumbnail to open the photo editor and crop it first.
How to make a photo collage
How many photos fit in a collage?
The layouts adapt to how many photos you picked. Grid and bordered grid scale to fit; spotlight gives one photo prominence and tiles the rest. Before/After is the exception: it uses the first two and leaves the rest in the grid, and the line above the button tells you so.
Can I make a before-and-after photo?
Yes. Pick Before/After as the layout. It splits the frame down the middle, puts your first photo on the left labelled Before and your second on the right labelled After, and the labels are in your own language. Pick just one photo and it falls back to a plain full-frame crop rather than refusing.
Can I add a caption to a collage?
Yes. The Caption tab works the same way for collages as for slideshows.
Why would I want a collage as a video?
Because a video can carry audio. A collage exported as video can have a background track attached on the Audio tab; a still image cannot.
Can I edit an individual photo before it goes into the collage?
Yes. Tap its thumbnail to open the photo editor — crop, rotate, adjust, blur, draw, add text or stickers — and the edited version is what gets used.
How to edit a photo before you use it
Does the Cutout tab send my photo to a server?
No. The subject detection runs on the device using Google's on-device ML Kit. Nothing about the photo leaves your phone. That is why the tab is called Cutout rather than AI — in this app the word AI is reserved for the features that need an account and send something to a server. Restyle, two tabs along, is one of those: it does send the photo you have open. Cutout does not.
Does editing overwrite my original photo?
No. The edit applies to the copy used for this export. Your file in your gallery is unchanged.
Why is the Cutout tab not doing anything on my phone?
The subject-detection model is downloaded through Google Play services on first use. On a device with no Google account or no connection at that moment, the download cannot happen and the app tells you so rather than failing silently.
Can I edit a video from this screen too?
Yes. If you added a video into a slideshow, tapping its thumbnail opens the full video editor instead.
How to turn typed text into a status
Can I use my own background image?
Yes. Beside the ten theme swatches on the Background tab there is one more option: tap it and pick where the picture comes from — your own photos, or one made with AI — and it fills the page behind your words with a soft dark band under the text so it stays readable. It is set per page, so one page can be a photo and the next a plain colour, and tapping the × beside the swatch puts the page back on its theme. If you would rather keep the photo at full size and put words on top of it, the photo editor's Text tool and a burned-in caption both still do that.
How many pages can one status have?
Enough for any normal status. Each page is styled on its own, so a multi-page status can change background colour part-way through.
What is the difference between separate images and the page-flip video?
Separate images post as several status entries that people tap through. The page-flip video is one entry that turns the pages for them — and it is the only one of the two that can carry audio.
How to make an audio status
Can I use a voice note?
Yes. Anything your phone can play as an audio file works, including a recorded voice note.
Can a multi-page status have audio?
Yes. Multiple pages plus audio exports as one video that flips through the pages while the track plays. Attach the track on the first page — one track plays under the whole status, so the Audio tab lives on page one rather than on every page.
Can I attach audio to a photo instead of typed text?
Yes — that is the photo flow's job. Pick your photos, set the output format to Video and attach a track on its Audio tab.
How to burn a caption onto a video or photo
Does every clip get the same caption?
Yes. One caption is applied to the whole export. To caption clips differently, export them separately.
Can I move the caption or change where it sits?
Yes. A small grid under the caption field places it in any of nine positions — left, centre or right, and along the top, the middle or the bottom of the frame. One tap sets both. The bottom of the frame is the default, and captions now sit further in from the edge than they used to, so they clear the buttons the app you post to draws over your status. For text you can drag to any position at all, use the photo editor's Text tool.
Is the caption part of the file, or metadata?
It is drawn into the pixels. It cannot be turned off by whoever watches it, and it survives re-sharing.
How to write a caption with AI
Do I need an account to use the rest of the app?
No. Sign-in is required only for the optional AI tools. Splitting, cropping, editing, slideshows, collages and text statuses all work with no account at all.
What does it cost?
AI credits are sold in one-off packs, from the credit badge at the top of the chat or from Settings → AI credits & account. The same credits pay for every AI tool in the app, including AI music.
What is sent to the server?
The message you type and the recent turns of that conversation, so follow-up questions make sense. The caption model only ever sees text — your videos and photos are not sent to it. (Restyle, in the photo editor, is the one tool that sends a photo.)
Are my chats stored online?
No. They are kept on your device and listed in the saved-chats view. Deleting one removes it.
Can I use the AI caption on a video as well as a text status?
Yes. The sparkle button appears on both Caption tabs and on the text status canvas, and fills whichever field it was opened from. On the text status canvas it offers music and pictures alongside captions, since that screen can use all three.
How to make background music with AI
How long is a generated track?
An instrumental is a fixed clip of about half a minute, which is the length a status wants. A sung song has a Song length row in the chat — half a minute up to three minutes — and each length shows its own price. Pick it before you send the message: the words are written to fit the length, so a three-minute song gets more verses than a half-minute one.
What does it cost?
Talking to it costs a credit a message. Actually making a track costs more, and the app always shows you the number on the button and again in the confirmation before it spends anything — the confirmation also tells you what you will have left. AI credits are sold as one-off packs, bought from the credit badge at the top of the chat or from Settings → Account.
Is a generated track free to post?
It is written for you rather than taken from a music library, so there is no attribution line to include and no per-track licence to go and read. The model is also instructed never to base a track on a named artist, band or song.
What if I do not like what it made?
Ask for a change and pick again — messages are the cheap part. Tracks you have already made are kept either way, so trying a second direction does not cost you the first one.
Can I send a generated track to someone?
Yes. Every track has a share button — on the player in the chat, on its row under Your AI music, and on its tile in your Gallery — which hands the audio file to WhatsApp, a messaging app, email or anything else installed.
Does this work offline?
No. The AI tools are the only features in the app that need a connection; every edit and export in the app runs on your phone.
Are my music chats stored online?
The chats themselves are kept on your device and listed in the saved-chats view, the same as caption chats. What is sent is text: the message you type, the recent turns of that conversation, and the titles and tags of tracks it has already made for you — that last one so it can offer you a track you already own instead of charging for a new one. The audio files themselves never leave your phone.
Can I put a generated track on a photo slideshow?
Yes. AI music appears on every audio slot in the app, including the photo flow’s Audio tab and the video editor’s Music tab, which mixes it under the video’s own sound instead of replacing it.
How to make a photo with AI
Does it use my own photos?
Only if you ask it to. Generating from a description works from your typed words alone — the app sends words and receives a picture, and none of your own photos go with it. The photo editor’s Restyle tab is one of two places that send one: it repaints the photo you have open, and that one photo is sent when you confirm. The other is the picture chat itself, where you can attach a photo and ask about it — the photo is sent once, when you attach it, and the chat says what that costs before you tap. Both need credits. Your videos never leave your device either way.
Can I attach a photo of my own to the chat?
Yes. The composer has an attach button beside the text box: attach a photo and ask about it, and the chat answers in the same thread. The photo is sent once, when you attach it — not while you type, and not again on the messages that follow. After that the conversation carries a short written description of what the model saw instead of the picture. Attaching costs credits on top of the message it rides on, and the composer names the price before you send. A screenshot, or a photo of a screen, is not supported yet — the app says so rather than charging you for an answer it cannot give. The conversation and that written description are kept on your device only.
Do I have to describe the look I want?
No. The Restyle tab offers a row of named looks you can just tap. The chat is still there under it, and it is the better choice when you want something the named looks do not cover, or when you want the AI to ask you questions first.
Will the result be marked as made with AI?
It may be. Pictures from this feature can carry a provenance mark added by the model itself, and some apps also add their own label when you post a picture they can tell was AI-generated. We do not remove either, and we cannot promise a picture will be labelled everywhere it is shared.
Can it just edit the photo instead?
Often, and it will say so. If what you are asking for is something the photo editor already does — black and white, brighter, straighten it, blur the background, crop it square — the chat offers to do it on your phone instead. That path costs nothing, runs offline, and lands in the editor as a single step you can undo.
Do I need an account?
Yes, for this. It is the same free Google sign-in the other AI tools use, and the same credits. Everything else in the app — splitting, cropping, editing, slideshows, collages, text statuses — works with no account at all.
What does it cost?
AI credits, sold in one-off packs from the credit badge at the top of the chat or from Settings → AI credits & account. A chat message costs a fraction of what making a photo costs, and the Create button names the exact number before you tap it. The same credits pay for every AI tool in the app.
Where is the photo kept?
On your device, in two places: the app’s own Your AI photos library, and your gallery’s Pictures/KLStatusMaker folder, so other apps can see it. It is not kept on any server. Deleting your account removes the library copy and leaves the gallery copy alone — see the privacy policy.
Can I get the same photo twice?
No. Asking for the same thing again gives you a different picture, which is why the app keeps every one you make rather than expecting you to regenerate it. Deleting a photo is final.
Does it work offline?
No. The AI tools are the only features in the app that need a connection; every export, and every edit but the photo editor’s Restyle tab, runs on your phone.
Can I put a generated photo in a slideshow or a collage?
Yes — that is one of the places the option lives; the text status background offers it too, for the picture behind your words. A generated photo behaves like any other photo you picked: you can crop it, edit it, caption it, and mix it with photos from your gallery in the same slideshow or collage.
How to save and share what you made
Where do saved files go?
Into your phone's normal gallery, so the Photos app and every other app can see them. On Android 10 and later that needs no permission at all. On Android 7 to 9 the app asks once for storage access, because older Android has no way for an app to reach even its own saved files without it.
Can I share without saving first?
Yes. Sharing works straight from the results screen; saving is a separate choice.
What is the small app badge on my exports?
Free exports carry a short branded ending on videos, a small watermark on photos, and a link to the app added to the text when you share. The results screen names all three before you save, and the line it says them on has a button that removes them. All three disappear with the optional subscription, and also while you are holding unused AI credits.
Can I get the clips back if I leave the results screen?
Anything you saved is in your gallery and in the app's own Gallery screen. Anything you did not save is discarded, but leaving is not a silent loss: the app asks Leave without saving? first, and you can go back and save.
Start from an idea instead of a tool
Do I have to use them?
No. The three original ways in — video, photos, text — are on the same screen under Start from scratch, with Edit and post underneath for opening either editor directly, and nothing about them has changed.
Can I get back out of an idea once I have tapped one?
There is nothing to get out of. An idea sets the controls and then stops existing; the setup screen you land on is the ordinary one, with every control still yours.
What if I pick a different number of photos than it asked for?
It still works. Before & after with one photo makes a single full-frame crop instead of a split; with five it uses the first two and leaves the rest in the grid. The line above the Create button tells you which is happening.
Does an idea cost anything?
No. None of them touches the AI features, so none of them can spend a credit.
How to make another status with the same settings
Does it change the status I already made?
No. It makes a new one. The saved file is untouched — that is the difference between this and Edit, which only text statuses get and which replaces the file in place.
Which settings come across?
Everything you chose that is not tied to the old media: clip length and split mode, the 9:16 crop, mute, the caption and its styling, the collage layout, the slideshow transition and motion, the per-photo duration, and every page of a text status with its own theme, font size and colour.
Why is my music gone?
A track is a file on your phone rather than a setting, and the app deliberately keeps no lasting claim on files you picked — that is what lets it work without asking for storage access. So a reused setup arrives without the track and tells you so; pick one again from the same Audio tab.
What happens to trim points on a longer or shorter video?
They are moved to fit. A split point past the end of the new video is dropped, trim handles are pulled inside it, and “the whole video” stays the whole video rather than becoming the old one’s length.
How far back does it remember?
The last twenty things you made, newest first, per flow. It is stored on the phone only and goes when the app does.
How to use the in-app Gallery
Why does this need storage permission on my older phone?
It only ever lists files it created itself, never the rest of your photos. On Android 10 and later that needs no permission. Older Android has no such distinction — an app either has storage access or cannot see its own saved files either — so on Android 7 to 9 the app has to ask.
Does deleting here delete the file from my phone?
Yes. It removes the file, not just the listing.
Why is there music in my gallery?
Tracks you made with AI music are listed here too, under AI music. They are the one thing the app saves that is neither a video nor an image, and they live in a Music/KLStatusMaker folder.
Why can I re-edit a text status but not a video?
Two different things, and both are available. Edit reopens the saved file itself and replaces it, which only works for a text status: that one is regenerated from the words and styling you typed, which the app still has, while a video’s edits are baked into the exported pixels and there is nothing left to reopen. Make another like this works on everything: it reuses the settings against media you pick now, and makes a new file.
Settings worth knowing about
Can I turn off analytics and crash reporting?
Yes, both, independently, in Privacy & Data. They are on by default and switching them off is a real off switch.
What is “Navigation bar on editing screens”?
Under Appearance. It adds the back/gallery/settings bar to the configure, editing and result screens; the home screen, gallery and settings always have one. It is off by default, but turning it on costs you nothing — on the text-status screen those three buttons float over the canvas, so your exported pages come out exactly the same size either way.
Can I see the welcome intro again?
Yes — Help & about › Show the intro again. It replays the same five pages you saw on first launch and returns you to Settings.
How do I remove the watermark and the video ending?
Two places. The results screen’s own line about them has a Remove this ending (or Remove this watermark) button that opens the plans, and Settings › Subscription always has them. The subscription also removes the app link added to the text when you share, and skips a whole extra encoding pass on video exports. Holding unused AI credits removes all three too, for as long as the balance lasts.
Where do I delete my account?
Settings → AI credits & account, which also has Export my data, AI credits and Credit history. If you have already uninstalled the app, use the web deletion page instead.
Where do I buy AI credits?
Either from the credit badge at the top of an AI chat — tap it at any balance, not just when you have run out — or from Settings → AI credits & account → AI credits. The same screen has Credit history, which lists what your credits have been spent on; purchase receipts live in Google Play.
